The Icon Series continues and, perhaps, we are taking a controversial twist…. you will have to let us know. In this edition we want to champion the Balenciaga Hourglass bag. Do we see some eyebrows shoot up?! Bear with us as we tell you why we think it deserves icon status….
Balenciaga has always been popular with streetwear lovers, celebs and influencers – we all know and love the City bags which are often even more identifiable by bold logos and witty graphics. Creative Director, Demna Gvasalia, introduced streetwear sensibility into Balenciaga when he came on board but has favoured paired back styling and clean lines, starting with the AW19 collection, where the Hourglass Bag was debuted.
So let's talk about the bag….in reference to the brand’s signature blazers, the shape of the Hourglass is accentuated by a ‘nipped in waist’ ie a curved, crescent shape. It has geometric details with the trapezoid shape and a large, distinctive B-shaped buckle. The overall impact is one that is classic but super contemporary.
High-fashion connoisseurs will instantly recognise the Hourglass top-handle bag as a Balenciaga creation, even before they spot the silver-tone ‘B’ motif suspended from the front flap. It’s because the piece’s shape – an elegant yet sharply contemporary ‘hourglass’ form that mixes angular points with sultry curves – is a signature of the House.
The bag comes in a variety of sizes and finishes ranging from an XL through to a small in matt calfskin, as pictured here. It can be worn using the top handle, or cross-body via the detachable strap.
Does this make the Hourglass an icon, does it have the staying power like the City bag? It’s a yes from us. Since the launch it has only gained popularity and we feel that this sleek, contemporary bag is here to stay with an appeal to a wide market.
