Louis Vuitton’s Alma…instantly recognisable and a truly iconic bag.
Rooted in Louis Vuitton history, this is a bag that is loved and adored by many, ourselves included. With elegant curves and structured shape and in an array of colours, sizes and materials, it’s a bag that can reflect individual style giving it a wide appeal.
Let’s delve into the details…
The Alma is one of Louis Vuitton’s oldest designs and was the second handbag created (after the Speedy). The original shape was designed in 1934, but the design we recognise today was introduced in 1992. Whilst researching the Alma, we came across a rumour that it was originally made for Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel as a custom order in 1925, and she then gave permission to produce the bag for the public. That’s the kind of story you just want to be true…
The shape was inspired by the Art Deco movement, and its simple structure makes it effortlessly stylish. The bag features bold and architectural lines, with two top handles and a removeable shoulder strap. The bag was made with functionality in mind – it has a double zip that opens super wide giving you plenty of room for all your essentials. We love bags that can take you from work to drinks in style, and the Alma is the perfect choice!
It’s also a bag that will stand the test of time. The structure means that she ages beautifully and keeps looking fresh. No sagging or wrinkles!
Whilst the Alma was originally produced in the House classic Monogram canvas, it has been reinvented and reinterpreted time and time again. There is a rainbow of colours available in Epi leather and Monogram Vernis, as well as the canvas options. She also comes in different sizes – from the dinky BB to the PM, MM and GM. The Alma has also played a role within many limited-edition collections, such as those with Stephen Sprouse and Takashi Murakami – these bags are now highly sought after and very coveted! The Alma GM in metallic Monogram Vernis was the IT bag of the 2000s, seen on the arms of Paris Hilton, KKW and so many more.
We always get super excited when an Alma comes into the studio, as they are all so different. We have two very beautiful bags in at the moment – a Monogram BB and cream Monogram Vernix PM. Which would you prefer?
We love the Alma and feel it is so deserving of a place in our Icon Series. Let us know if you agree….
